Out of all the developed countries in the world, the teen pregnancy rate is the highest in the US. While teen pregnancy numbers have come down since they peaked in the early part of the 1990s, the US is still way ahead of all the other countries. Hence, people often wonder why is the teen pregnancy rate so high.
There are different opinions as to why teen pregnancy rate is so high. Some contend that family values have declined over the years and today people are giving less importance to marriage. Also, there are more single parent families today than ever before. All these are believed to be contributing to increased teen pregnancy. However, not everyone agrees with this point of view. They claim that the US has to change the way sex education is dealt with. If the country adopts a different way of imparting sex education, it can help in bringing down the teen pregnancy rate. A good example is The Netherlands where sex education is taught in primary schools, but emphasis is given on relationships and sex rather than connecting sex with biology. It is quite possible that because this way of imparting sex education to teenagers, the teen pregnancy rate in the country is extremely low.
Also, teenagers do not take responsibility for their actions. This has to be taught to them. If they indulge in unprotected sex, then there are higher chances of getting pregnant and contracting STDs.
In fact, if you look closely, all the aforementioned causes are responsible for high rate of teen pregnancy to a certain extent.
