Teen Pregnancy And School Drop Out Rates

As per the statistics available from the CDC, nearly two-thirds of births among teenagers occur in girls who are less than 18 years of age, and majority of these girls did not intend getting pregnant. However, when teen pregnancy occurs, this can have a profound effect on the teenage girl's life, especially where her education is concerned.

In the US, teen pregnancy is one of the major causes of girls dropping out of school. According to available statistics, teen pregnancy and school drop out rates are interconnected. Just around fifty percent of teenage mothers end up finishing their high school by the time they reach the age of 22. However, this is relatively low compared to ninety percent of teenage girls who do not get pregnant or give birth during their teenage years. Around 70 percent of teens who get pregnant end up dropping out of school before getting their high school diplomas.

In addition, it has been seen that when teen pregnancy forces a girl to drop out of school, then the children of the girl have a higher chance of dropping out of school. In addition, these children tend to have higher chances of being involved in crime, being unemployed after attaining adulthood due to lack of education, and themselves becoming teen parents.

The United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy compared to all other industrialized nations. Unfortunately, the country also has high school drop out rates due to high number of teen pregnancies. Also, the high teen pregnancy rate and school drop out rates end up burdening the healthcare system, Social Security Administration as well as foster care system in the country.
