Families who have to endure teen pregnancy end up facing many conflicting emotions. One of the first emotions they feel is shock. They are not ready to be grandparents yet, and are upset that their teenage son or daughter has become one of the thousand teenagers who will become parents well before their time. While, teen pregnancy is not as high as it used to be during the 1990s, it is still a problem in the US.
Once the teen pregnancy is accepted, the families have to begin preparing the teen for the change in life which will occur due to the pregnancy and subsequent birth. The changes will be for everyone involved, but more so for the teen. If the family is from a low income group, they will have to burden financial responsibility of the pregnant teen and later for the newborn child. This can take a toll on the family and can lead to unpleasant scenes when money is short.
In addition, the parents may feel that they are responsible in some way for this incident, and they can end up facing guilt. Many parents are also embarrassed and fearful of what the neighbors will say about their family. However, it is important for the family members to openly discuss their feelings and emotions.
The first instinct of the parents would be making their daughter have an abortion. However, if the daughter is against it, they may suggest putting up the child for adoption. But at times, the parents and the teenager may decide to keep the baby. In which case, the parents should be ready to help their teenage daughter financially, as most probably she would have to dropout of school to take care of the baby. The parents invariably end up taking the financial responsibility of paying for the newborn baby's food, clothing and medical care which many families may not really be able to afford. Then there is problem of deciding where the daughter and her newborn child will stay.
The difficulties for families who endure teenage pregnancy are in all aspects of life, and they should sit together and talk about how to overcome the difficulties. There is no point getting stressed out as only making rational and logical decisions can help.
