What Is Peer Pressure ?

Peer pressure is not something that occurs only among teens. In fact, it exists in all age groups. Whoever has friends is influenced by their behavior to an extent. Also, it is possible that among our friends circle we may look up to some one. Peer pressure is a kind of pressure to covet someone we admire in our known group of people. This person may have a good or bad influence. Yes, it is possible to look up to someone who has a good influence on us.

The age group that is affected the most by peer pressure is teenagers and adolescents. In this age group, kids usually admire their friends. They want to do everything that their friends do. It does not really matter whether it is good or bad. For example, if you have children whose friends smoke and drink, then your child is being exposed to peer pressure.

No matter how many good values you could have passed on, pre-teens exposed to peer pressure are often torn between their values and pressure from friends. Children want to belong to a certain group, and they know that it is not possible if they do not behave accordingly to the group.

The behavior pattern changes in a teenager when they are under peer pressure. Either they totally imitate their friends or they may get withdrawn and reserved because they are unsure of what to do. Peer pressure often subjects children and adolescents into undesired activities like smoking, resorting to truancy, sex, drugs, drinking, shoplifting and other violent behavior.
