There are two types of immunization or vaccinations. One is active immunization and the other is passive immunization. Active immunization is used to stimulate the body’s natural immune response to the virus injected. Once the body fights the virus and wins over it, it automatically develops the immunity to the disease caused by the virus.
Only here the virus used is an extremely weak kind of virus, which cannot do much damage to the body even if the body does not fight it. It is prepared by taking a harmful substance like bacteria or virus which is then deactivated and weakened biologically. These bacteria or virus cannot do much harm to the body anymore. The body’s immune system works by reading the type of virus or bacteria and storing its structure in the memory. It does not matter to the body if this harmful substance is potent or not. The immune system automatically responds to foreign substances.
The passive vaccinations the antibodies that are made to respond to certain organisms are given directly to the person. The antibodies can be prepared using the blood of animals like horses and pigs that have been exposed to the disease, and have developed immunity. Sometimes blood is also collected from a large group of people who have resistance to a certain disease. This is called pooled immune globulin. Passive immunization is used mainly in people whose immune system is not very strong and does not respond immediately. However, the drawback is that this type of immunization is temporary as it ejects the antibodies out of the system after some time.
