As the name suggests, cyberbullying is a kind of bullying that occurs using the tools available on the Internet. It can be perpetrated via emails, instant messaging, chat rooms, forums, message boards or very cell phones. The main aim of cyberbullying is to undermine the confidence and make the victim suffer. Why a person indulges in cyberbullying is not known to anyone but the perpetrator.
Many social scientists believe that cyberbullying is an extension of traditional bullying. However, since Internet is easily accessible, the bullies like the anonymity offered by it compared to traditional bullying, which is always face to face.
Cyberbullying is more common among teenagers, and typically, the bully will be someone known to the victim. However, at times the bullying can be done by an adult too. In this case, it is not known as cyberbullying. It is referred to as cyberstalking and cyber harassment.
In the US, there is widespread cyberbullying. This is probably because the Internet is not widely used by students for social activities and school work. Hence, many schools and parents are now trying to combat this issue using various means. Some schools allow the victims to report the bullying anonymously, and encourage the victims to speak to school counselors. If the cyberbullying occurs during school hours or undermines the school's environment, the schools can also suspend, expel or take some other disciplinary action against the bullies. Furthermore, there are some schools that have programs on what is cyberbullying, its effects, and why no one should indulge into it.More Articles :
