Cyberbullying is quite common considering that the Internet allows the perpetrator to stay anonymous and still continue harassing, defaming or spreading rumors about their victims. If you are a victim of cyberbulling, the following tips will help you immensely to deal with the situation.
Tips to Combat Cyberbullying:
- It is best not to react to the cyberbullying. In fact, getting a reaction from the victim is what the perpetrator wants, and when this occurs, the cyberbully has power over his or her victim.
- Never resort to retaliation. The moment a victims begins to retaliate, can turn the victim into a cyberbully and it also helps to reinforce the perpetrator's behavior.
- All evidence of cyberbullying, such as text messages, emails, and transcripts from the chat rooms, should be saved as evidence in case the bullying escalates.
- Just as the cyberbully is using technology, a victim can also use the same technology to block the cyberbully. If the bullying occurs in a chat room, then it is advisable to leave the room at once.
- If the cyberbullying is getting on your nerves, talk to a person you can trust, like parents, school counselor or even a friend. If the bully happens to be a schoolmate, then find out whether there is some way you can report him or her to the school authorities.
- If you know who is cyberbullying you, you can also approach the person and ask him or her to stop.
- Refrain from gossiping or talking ill about a person you do not like. Research has shown that when people resort to this behavior, it can increase the chances of getting cyberbullied.
