Cyberbullying Statistics

While some people do not think that cyberbulling is a problem in modern society, the statistics tell otherwise. Cyberbullying statistics show that over half of teenagers in the US have been exposed to this form of bullying. Also, with the advancements in technology, the problem is getting worse.

Cyberbullies resort to using a variety of means to bully their victims, like emails, text messaging, blogs, videos, websites, chat rooms, forums, cell phones and other forms of communication that can take place electronically.

Here are some cyberbullying statistics, which will actually frighten you.

• Most cyberbullying takes place in chat rooms, with around 56 percent of youth being victims.
• About 33 percent of teenagers have experienced cyberbullying, with majority of them being disrespected and ignored.
• Around 49 percent of teenagers have been cyberbullied through instant messaging platforms; and 28 percent through emails.
• It has been reported that 34 percent of the bullied youth feel frustrated, 30 percent experience anger and around 22 percent experience sadness due to the cyberbullying.
• Strangely 41 percent of cyberbullied youth do not tell about their bullying to people in their lives, and around 38 percent talk about the bullying to an online friend.
• Most youth who cyberbully feel that this form of bullying is fun or even instructive as it can help strengthen the person being bullied.
• Most incidents of cyberbullying occur when the victims are at home. This is especially true for school students.
• Of 6,000 youth interviewed about cyberbullying, 17 percent acknowledged that they were cyberbullied at once. Hence, this means that actual number of people being cyberbullied must be much higher.
