Cyberbullying And Teenagers

Cyberbullying and teenagers tend to go together. Based on a survey conducted, around 43 percent of teenagers have been victims of cyberbullying; and strangely, this is more prevalent among female teenagers compared to male teenagers. Also, cyberbullying is the highest among teenagers aged between 15 and 16 years.

Teenagers who are victims of cyberbullying tend to ask the bully to stop; use their telephone or computer to block the person from communicating with them; or they tend to talk about the incident with a close friend. It has been observed that when a teenager experiences cyberbullying, he or she is more likely to talk about it with a friend, rather than to the parents. Also, it is interesting to note that sooner or later majority of the teenagers figure out who is cyberbullying them. Where teenagers are concerned cyberbullies are often friends, students going to the same school as the victim, or acquaintances. Very few teenagers are cyberbullied by a complete stranger, but it does occur.

Most teenagers are of the opinion that they should take the necessary steps to stop the cyberbullying, and this involves blocking all forms of communication with the bullies; or informing the person to stop the bullying.

In the US, teenager cyberbullying is highly prevalent and there is some level of concern among parents and educators, especially since some of the victims have taken the drastic action of committing suicide. However, teenagers feel that they should tackle the bullies and not the schools as the methods employed by them are usually ineffective.
