Cyberbullying often happens outside the school hours and school premises when kids are in their homes. Hence, many wonder can school policy protect a child from cyberbullying. This is a very difficult question to answer, as in some states there are laws that allow schools to take action against kids found indulging in cyberbullying; and there are other states that do not have laws, but schools still have policy against this form of bullying. However, in such schools the action that it can take against a bully is limited. Also, with some parents taking the schools to court have made these schools tentative about pursuing their policy on cyberbulling.
So, the issue is a lot more complicated that what it appears to be. While school policy can educate the children about cyberbullying and the ways to prevent it from continuing, if there is no state law, the school cannot do anything unless if the bullying is affecting the school environment or causing harm to the student or teacher within the premises of the school. At the same time, it is important to note that cyberbullying often occurs outside the school hours when children are at home.
If you see the other side of coin, schools and teachers feel that since the bullying occurs outside school hours, it is the parents' responsibility. Also, teachers and school authorities are not trained to handle this issue.
But social scientists believe that programs conducted by schools on cyberbullying can be effective for bullies as well as victims. Hence, a school policy can protect a child from cyberbullying to a certain extent.
