What Is The Physical And Emotional Consequences Of Childhood Obesity ?

There are long term and short term physical and emotional consequences of childhood obesity. Where physical consequences are concerned, childhood obesity can result in obesity related health problems that can continue into adulthood. Diseases like respiratory problems, diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiovascular ailments, and sleep apnea are some of the physical consequences of childhood obesity.

However, it is the emotional consequences that end up causing a lot of distress to the children and can scar them for life. Most children who are obese lack self confidence and also have a low self esteem. They have to endure taunts in the school and are often not included in social groups. This causes the children to have low self esteem, which affects their school performance and social skills. These children are unable to meet their full potential and are always underperformers.

Unfortunately, many of these children end up with eating disorders. They may end up taking drastic measures like extreme dieting to shed the pounds or overeating to cover their emotional pain. At times, even binge eating can occur when the kids are unhappy about themselves and their appearance.

The pain of childhood obesity is often carried into adulthood. Even as adults, the kids will not be able to fit into social groups. They will be unable to make friends and be loners. This can lead to many problems, including display of aggressive behavior or even resulting in illegal activities.

Unfortunately, obese children have problems at both physical and emotional levels. And, both levels have to be addressed in order for the children to lead a normal life. One is not possible without the other.
