Cause Of Obesity Among Children

If children eat food and drink beverages that are full of calories, it is but normal that they will put on weight, especially if the children are not physically active. And, then over a period of time, these children will turn obese. However, just eating or drinking calorific items is not sufficient to cause obesity among children. There are several factors involved.

Many times the cause of obesity among children is genetic. If obesity runs in the family, there is a higher tendency for the child to be obese, especially if the intake of calories is more than what the child is burning. So, if a child has a parent or sibling who is obese, there is a higher chance of the child also being obese.

However, the major cause of obesity among children is their eating habits. Today, children consume more food that is processed and labeled as junk food. In addition, instead of drinking milk or plain water, child today consume sodas, which have high sugar content. Basically, the eating habits of children are unhealthy and this leads to obesity among them. In addition, the amount of calories that the children consume is not burned by model lifestyle habits like watching television, sitting for hours in front of the computer or playing video games. This sedentary lifestyle is causing the kids to become overweight and obese.

In a small percent of children, obesity is caused due to medical conditions. These medical conditions include thyroid disorders, hormonal problems, chemical imbalances and possible disorders related to the metabolism rate. In such children, if the medical condition is treated, the problem of obesity can be alleviated.
