Self esteem is very important for children and their healthy state of mind. There are several advantages when children have high self esteem. One is they will be confident and will also have self respect. They will refrain from doing anything that puts them down. They are more likely to believe in themselves, and will take on new challenges with more ease. This needs a lot of confidence, which they already have.
On the other hand children, who have low self esteem, will avoid taking on challenges and also do not have confidence in themselves or their abilities. They basically think that they are not good enough. Such kids are more vulnerable and easily fall prey to social evils.
There are several other positive qualities that self esteem brings about. Like children who have good self esteem will learn to trust others, they feel secure and also achieve more in life. Otherwise, children with low self esteem will lack trust in everyone and also will be scared of taking up new opportunities when they present themselves.
Parents play a very important role in developing the self esteem. In order to develop self esteem in your children, make sure that you allow them to make their own decisions. This can be done under your guidance, but allow the children to have the final say in matters that relate to them. When your children do something right, make sure that you praise them and encourage them more towards taking their own decisions. Criticize less and always see that you resort to constructive criticism. Never compare your children with others and make them feel small.
Self esteem takes a lot of courage. So, make sure your children feel courageous at the end of the day.
