In today's society where sex is no longer a hush-hush affair, the free spiritedness has also given rise to an alarmingly high number of young Americans falling prey to sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. A number of STDs do not even show any symptoms of being in your system, since they remain dormant for long periods of time.

Top 5 STDs:

HPV: This is called the Humanpapilloma Virus, and is the most widespread STD, which is also without cure. In the United States alone, more than a quarter of the nation’s entire population is affected by this virus. It has over hundred types of strains, and 13 are known to result in cancer of the cervix in women.

The HSV-2 is the one that causes herpes on the genitals. It shows no symptoms and affects one out of every five people.

Syphilis: One of the deadliest of STDs, this is a bacteria that comes with very distinct symptoms, like tiny small bumps on the infected areas. These disappear within a few weeks but can cause serious damage if left untreated.

Chlamydia: This STD is curable and caused due to bacteria. Its symptoms include unusual discharge, burning sensation while urinating, and sometimes a foul odor emits from the vagina. It left untreated, it can adversely affect the female reproductive system, and this effect is completely irreversible.
