Before penicillin was discovered, sexually transmitted diseases or STD were major killers. Without any awareness regarding safe sexual practices and the absence of medication led to the increase of these STDs, with the most terrifying of them all being syphilis. |
STDs did not spare anyone, and many famous people have been affected by these diseases. The list includes such illustrious names like Adolf Hitler, Ludwig van Beethoven, Al Capone and Vincent Van Gogh. Powerful people, who ruled nations and influenced countless lives, were left helpless in the face of an attack from STDs, especially syphilis.
Take the man who is synonymous with the mafia in the United States, Al Capone. He ruled Chicago and his fame was known far and wide; he had spent his life brining his opponents down, but he was no match for syphilis. The same goes for Ugandan ruler Idi Amin. The list also has many more famous names, like Ivan the Terrible, Napolean, Winston Churchill, the Tsar of Russia, John Keats, Mozart, King Henry VIII and Oscar Wilde. Though it must be stated here that there is no recorded evidence of all of these people having been affected by STDs, the recorded symptoms all suggest that syphilis is the only possibility, in all cases.
The list of celebrities with STDs does not end here. Other famous people with STDs include Manet, Antonio Botto, King Edward VI, Winston Churchhill's father Randolph, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche , Guy de Maupassant, Franz Schubert, Vladimir Lenin (it was a closely guarded secret for a long time due to his status), Hugo Wolf, Howard Hughes and Karen Blixen.
