The reproductive system of a man contains prostate gland. The prostate gland is not a gland as the name refers, but it is also an organ of the body which is made of seventy percent of glandular tissue and thirty percent of fibromuscular tissue. |
The shape and size of the prostate gland in male adult is like a walnut and is 20 grams. It is positioned under the male bladder and at the front of rectum. The prostate is surrounded by a fibrous capsule.
At the time of ejaculation, 20 percent to 30 percent of the total seminal fluid is secreted by the glandular tissue present in the prostate. This fluid is produced regularly but it increases in case of excitement during sex. The semen comprises of spermatozoa, prostatic fluid and seminal vesicle fluid, it also includes fluid produced from the minor glands. Calcium, zinc, citric acid, acid phosphatase, albumin, and prostatic specific antigen form the secretion. These contents lubricate the urethra, and protect and nourish the sperms.
The growth of the prostate is very slow from the birth of a male child to puberty, and when the boy reaches puberty, the prostate increases in weight, and the size is doubled. And, for the next thirty years or so, it remains the same. In some cases it may never enlarge in size, while in a majority of men nonmalignant enlargement, which in medical terms is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, occurs.
The American Foundation for Urologic Disease estimated that more than 50 percent men over 50 years of age suffer from prostate enlargement. As the age increases the percentages of men suffering from this problem also increases.
