The prostate is a very important part of the male reproductive system. Larger part of the liquid ejaculated by a male is contributed by the prostate. The prostate starts growing after a man reaches forty. This enlargement of prostate may not be a dangerous disease but it changes your lifestyle. |
The growth of the prostate is very slow from the birth of a male child to puberty, and at the time of puberty it increases in weight and the size is doubled. And, for the next thirty years it remains the same. In some cases, it may never enlarge in size. But many men are not fortunate enough, and they suffer from nonmalignant enlargement which in medical terms is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.
If there is blood in the urine stream, if the urine stream is weaker or smaller, if the urination is frequent with small amounts, if the urination causes pain, if the bladder is not emptied fully, if there is any problem to begin urination and pain during ejaculation, it can be an indication of prostate cancer.
As the age of a man increases the testosterone produced by him will be reduced. But there are other hormone levels which increase and results in the increased testosterone levels in the prostate gland. The conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is done by 5-alpha-reductase enzyme.
As a man advances in age his estrogen levels are also increased and this slows down the process of eliminating the DHT. As the DHT begins to mount up the prostate grows.
Many men try to ignore the abnormal growth of the prostate gland.
