Men above forty suffer from prostate disease. Eighty percent of men have BPH, or enlarged prostate. One in ten men suffers from prostate cancer. And, around thirty thousand men die every year due to prostate cancer in the US. |
The benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostate enlargement (BPE) is a prostate disorder which is common. Changes in the hormones in the prostate lead to BPH. The symptom of BPH is the abnormal growth of the gland due to rise in the constituent cells. The PSA levels are raised 2 to 3 times due to BPH. As the PSA levels increase, there is a chance of getting prostate cancer. The inner part of the prostate is first affected and it enlarges, and also effects urethra. The squeezing of the urethra can lead to urinary problems. BPH can also block the urinary tract which will make urinating problematic and result in kidney and bladder problems.
TURP is a kind of transurethral surgery which does not need any external cut. An instrument is inserted via urethra to reach the prostate. There are other two surgeries which are performed in addition to the TURP. They are transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP), and transurethral laser incision of the prostate (TULIP). The urethra is widened in TUIP; small cuts are made in the bladder neck and also in the prostrate gland. In TULIP the tissue is melted by using the laser beam.
It takes one week to recover and the patient will have discomfort and pain. Doctors prescribe some medicines usually after the TURP. The medicines are B&O suppository, bulk forming laxative, detrol, macrobid and pyridium.
