Some public organizations, federal agencies and private firms have conducted some research on obesity. There is information available relating to obesity conducted by these organizations. The increase in the number of obese people depends on factors like environment, economic status, social factors, behavior and genes. The number of hours a person sleeps also has an effect on the weight of a person. |
A person with excess weight is at a risk of getting type 2 diabetes. People with excess weight are at higher risk of getting diabetes than the other people. The extra pounds on the body decrease the capability of the body to manage blood sugar with the use of insulin. The increase of diabetic patients is due to the problem of being overweight and obese. Obesity is also a cause of cancer. It causes kidney cancer without any gender differences. Obesity can also lead to colorectal cancer, cancer of the gallbladder and thyroid cancer.
Research on obesity revealed that being overweight also causes some social problems. People with extra pounds are not given preference when they stick their photos onto their resumes in the job market. They are regarded as lazy, sloppy and incapable.
Children in schools also suffer psychologically when they are teased and harassed about their weight by their friends and classmates. Even the teacher may show a negative approach to overweight and obese children. The research reveals that the girl students who are obese are at a risk of not getting admitted into college and suffering from eating disorders as they grow older.
People who are obese also suffer from social isolation, depression and anxiety. Their confidence levels degrade and it affects their eating habits.
