During the last twenty years obesity has increased rapidly. If you look at the obesity statistics in the United States, you will find that more than nine million children and sixty million adults are suffering from obesity. |
Obesity is a condition where the weight of the body is more than it has to be. The main reasons for people to become obese are environment and behavior.
Obesity leads to many diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, osteoarthritis, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, cancer, gallbladder and respiratory problems. So the people who are overweight should be cautious.
Obesity can be diagnosed using many methods. One of the popular tools used is body mass index (BMI). BMI checks whether the weight of a person is proportionate to his height or not. Many people consider this as the best way to know the quantity of fat present in the body. There are other tools also like measuring skin fold thickness, waist circumference, ultrasounds, taking ratios of waist to hip circumference, and MRI and CT scans.
In the year 1991, 15 percent to 19 percent of the US population was obese in 4 states, and there was not a single state in the US with 20 percent of the population being obese. But in the year 2004, the situation changed dramatically. 15 percent to 19 percent of the population was obese in 7 states, and in 33 states, 20 percent to 24 percent of the people were obese, while the percentage of obese people had crossed 25 percent in 9 states.
As the day schedule is becoming hectic, people are not able to eat healthy food and are depending on the fast food, which consists of more fat and less nutrients. There is no time to exercise which is also a contributory factor when it comes to obesity. People should start eating healthy foods and spare some time to exercise regularly to improve their health condition.
