Erectile dysfunction or impotence is a reason to worry not only for older men. It can strike at just about any age, and close to twenty million men in the US have been affected by this condition at some point of time. |
It is said that when the inability to get or maintain an erection is a one off thing, there is nothing to worry about; but if it becomes a regular occurrence then one must not ignore it and seek medical attention immediately. The Annals of Internal Medicine (2003) had published a study which revealed that erectile dysfunction was more common among older men, especially those who were 50 years and above. Till long doctors were under the impression that this was due to certain psychological factors, but recent studies show that almost 90 percent of erectile dysfunction cases among older men stemmed from physical issues.
Research has been conducted on men in the age group 53 to 90, and the results show that the contributing factors that lead to this condition were reduced levels of physical activity, alcohol and smoking. About 10 percent of men over 80 reported no major problem in their sex lives, but 12 percent of younger men were suffering from serious sexual disorders, just like around 30 percent of men over 50.
The Massachusetts Male Aging Study (1994) was conducted on men between 40 and 70 years of age. It found that 52 percent of them had mild or moderate erectile dysfunction, while 10 percent suffered from total erectile dysfunction.
These and more studies imply that it is not easy to define the average for erectile dysfunction, although some take it as between 59 and 69 years of age.
