Erectile dysfunction is when a man is repeatedly unable to get an erection or maintain it in order to facilitate sexual intercourse. Though the word 'impotence' is often associated other related problems like lack of libido or ejaculation irregularities, erectile dysfunction pretty much defines the exact nature of the problem. |
Erectile dysfunction occurs when the series of events that leads to a normal erection do not happen as they should; which means that there could be problems like damage to arteries, muscles, nerves or fibrous tissues, or it could be due to conditions like kidney ailment, diabetes, alcoholism, vascular or neurological diseases, atherosclerosis or MS. About 35 to 50 percent men, who suffer from diabetes, are said to have experienced erectile dysfunction at some point of time. Obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, certain drugs like those for blood pressure, antidepressants, suppressing appetite, and antihistamines, injury to the penis and surrounding area or radical prostate or balder surgeries too cause this condition. About ten percent to twenty percent of erectile dysfunctional cases have also been reported due to psychological reasons like low self-esteem, fear, guilt, performance anxiety and stress.
Cures recommended by physicians to treating this condition can range from simple lifestyle changes to invasive procedures. For some men, all it takes are simple measures like losing weight or giving up smoking. Others have been able to manage this condition by giving up the use of drugs with detrimental side effects. Extreme measures to cure erectile dysfunction include injecting drugs, implanting devices and complicate surgeries that involve arteries and veins.
