Erectile Dysfunction abbreviated as ED is a grave sexual disorder in men manifesting as the inability to have an erection altogether or tendency to sustain the firmness required for sexual intercourse and linked pleasures. The term 'impotence' is generally also associated with this condition. However, impotency covers a broad area of sexual problems, while ED refers to a specific kind of dysfunction. |
As per records furnished by the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) in the year 1985 in the US, for every one thousand men, around 7.7 visited a physician for ED. By the year 1999, with the increase in awareness and shedding of linked inhibitions, the rate came to 22.3. One of the biggest steps in this area took place in March 1998 with the release of the oral drug, sildenafil citrate commonly known as Viagra.
Erectile dysfunction could result from various physical as well as psychological factors. One of the fundamental causes of the same is the decrease of flow of blood to the penis. Arteriosclerosis, a vascular disease leads to the narrowing and hardening of blood vessels, which results in the reduction in flow of blood, and thereby causes impotence. However, this is a cause in generally men over the age of 60.
Diabetes mellitus that symbolizes high blood sugar level also tends to cause injury to small blood vessels as well as nerves leading to ED.
Medicines administered for problems related to the heart, elevated blood pressure, antidepressants and tranquilizers have a detrimental affect on the process of erection as well.
Other causes for the condition include excessive drinking of alcohol, hormonal imbalance, and neurological problems such as injuries to the spinal cord or the brain injuries, MS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. Certain surgeries associated to the colon, prostate, bladder, or rectum can also cause injury to the blood vessels and nerves associated with penile erection.
