Circumcision is the medical process wherein the sheath of tissue that protects the tip of the penis called foreskin is removed. This process is conducted a few days after the child is born on the requisition of parents. The practice of circumcision commenced in the olden days as a part of one’s religious belief especially amongst the Muslims and Jews. These communities observe the belief in various parts of the world till today. |
However, gradually with the spread of better medical know-how, the practice is on the decline in the US in comparison to the statistics about five decades ago. Despite the increasing awareness and reduction in numbers, there are still many parents who insist on circumcising their new born male child for cultural and/or religious reasons.
Parents resorting to circumcision believe in the procedure for various reasons. In the 1800s many held the belief that this practice would dissuade boys from the act of masturbation. During this century, masturbation was considered to be an unpleasant habit and in terms of religion almost labeled as a sin. This ideology has remained so in the minds of many till date. Many also hold the notion that circumcising the penis leads to higher sexual pleasure for both the sexes. However, studies have contradicted both these beliefs. Neither does the method deter males from masturbation, nor does it add to sexual bliss as many men feel that the presence of the foreskin makes the sensitivity level higher. Research reveals that the process does reduce the probability of infection, inflammation and cancer of the penis in men. However, these opinions still need further investigations for authentication.
