For those who opt to circumcise their male children for religious or cultural beliefs, there is enormous amount of anxiety linked to the actual administration of the process, especially for first timers. The process is indeed painful, which is a well known fact but many are unaware of the intricate details involved in the actual process. |
Doctors generally recommend that circumcision if desired should be done within days of the birth of the child as with the increase in age, more medication would be required to endure the pain by the patient. Parents also prefer an early circumcision so that the child does not have painful memories of the same. Many families wait for the child to grow up and exercise his options for going through the procedure or not. However, no matter what be the age, the process is short lasting for around 15 minutes.
Circumcision is conducted by a doctor at a clinic or hospital. During the process, the child is made to lie on a firm surface. In cases of a new born, the arms and legs are held with Velcro straps to keep the position stationary. Firstly, the penis is cleaned to prevent any infections. For new born babies, the surgery is conducted under local anesthesia, while babies who are more than two months are administered general anesthesia. Once the area is numb or the baby slips into unconsciousness as per the type of anesthesia, a sterile circumcision clamp is appended on to the tip of the penis. Mainly doctors utilize a Gomco clamp, Mogen clamp, or the Plastibell device for the purpose. Doctors have their individual preferences of the kind of clamp to be used. Now, with the aid of a sterile scalpel, the foreskin is cut out. Sometimes, scissors are utilized for the removal.
