The circumcision operation involves removing the retractable skin that is located on the tip of the penis. The occurrence of this type of surgery is extremely high in the US. Although, the incidence of circumcision among males was reported as 90 percent in the year 1979 did slide down to 60 percent in 1999, even then the rate of surgery is much higher in the country in comparison to the other progressive nations of the world. The surgery is primarily performed for religious, social or cultural reasons. |
Families following Islam or Judaism believe in the practice very firmly. However, many parents opt for this operation for purely medical reasons as well. Certain studies indicate a lower incidence of infections of the urinary tract and also of the foreskin in circumcised males. The surgery is also reported to thwart cancer and phimosis, and lower the chances of contracting STDs. Despite, these findings the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that these statistics are not high enough for parents to practice circumcision as a norm.
The operation takes about 15 minutes. In infants, the method involves the use of specially designed clamp that is responsible for moving the foreskin away from the tip of the penis. In older boys, the cut on the foreskin is made at the base so that it can be removed from the tip. n. The surgery should be avoided in premature babies and infants with hemophilia. Although many believe that the surgery does not cause excessive pain but doctors suggest the use of local or general anesthesia to minimize the effects of the underestimated pain associated with the surgery. The operation requires after care in both new born babies and infants. After cleaning the wound, an antibiotic liniment or petroleum jelly needs to be applied to the operated area. In cases of an incision, the dressing of the wound needs to be changed frequently. Any discomfort or pain experienced after the operation fades off slowly and so does the bruise.
