There are certain health questions that all men must consider asking themselves from time to time, if they are keen on living a long, healthy and active life. The biggest health threats for men come from smoking, drinking alcohol, little or no regular exercise, and eating unhealthy food for years. |
Saturated fats pose a serious health risk for men. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture suggests that in order to remain healthy, adults must only consume up to thirty percent of their daily calories in fat, of which only ten percent should be taken through saturated fats.
Less saturated fats means lower blood cholesterol levels, and less chances of elevated blood pressure. There are a number of sources of heart-healthy fats that are good for men, like flax seeds, fish, hemp seeds, safflower, canola and olive oils.
When it comes to drinking alcohol or smoking, the key is moderation. There are cigarettes available in the market today that are labeled as ‘pesticide-free’ or ‘all natural’ or light’, but the bottom-line is that all of them are made from tobacco, and can cause lung cancer. Drinking red wine has certain virtues though, since recent studies show that red wine contains reservatrol, which can help repair tissues, as well as multiply the number of stem cells present in the body.
A diet rich in fiber that allows daily intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, brown rice, millet and oats can help prevent colon cancer in men. Men above the age of 55 often have prostrate health concerns. A doctor must be consulted when there is frequent or incomplete urination, or an enlarged prostate.
