Talking To Children About Artificial Insemination |

Artificial insemination is a means a woman has of getting pregnant outside sexual intercourse. It is insertion of semen into the vagina by artificial means, usually through a tube. Artificial insemination is resorted to when a husband is suffering from male infertility because of a poor semen quality, or for any other reason. |
Some women who prefer to remain single and yet wish to experience motherhood have themselves impregnated by this means.
Whatever the underlying reasons, the topic invariably arises at some point in the child’s life. One important aspect of raising a child is never to side-step difficult matters like this, but always to give a satisfactory explanation. In doing so, the child develops trust.
Start by telling the child about different family structures, like a mother and father, foster families, single parent families and same-sex families. Impress on the child that the structure is secondary. What is important is that the child was conceived because he or she is loved and wanted.
Next take the child through the intricacies of the difference between a parent and a biological father. Explain how a child inherits many features from the biological parents, emphasizing also that many features come from the father as well. Then take the child through the love, affection and care given by a parent, whether or not the parent is the biological father.
Explain to the child how conception takes place, how some mothers become pregnant at home, while in others this takes place at the doctor’s office. Ensure the child differentiates between the two locations.
Finally, when the child is learning sex education at school, bring up the term ‘artificial insemination’. By this time the child should know the difference between a biological father and a parent. Explain precisely how artificial insemination takes place. The child will then better understand why he or she has not inherited any traits from a parent.
