Human reproduction by what is considered the ‘natural method’ has been the method of procreation since the dawn of mankind, or Adam and Eve, depending on one’s evolutionary beliefs. Artificial insemination in humans, however, has been known to have successfully evolved in the latter half of the last century. |
Artificial insemination has proved to be a boon to many couples who otherwise would not have been able to produce a child. There are two modalities; one where the husband has fertile sperm but is unable to impregnate his wife for other reasons. In such a case, his sperm can be harvested to artificially impregnate his wife. The child of such a union follows the natural process and carries the genes of both parents. The other is where the husband’s sperm is inadequate for fertilization and the wife might have to be impregnated by a donor sperm which may or may not be anonymous.
Artificial insemination is also resorted to by single mothers who wish to raise a child and by same-sex couples.
There are several legal and ethical issues involved in artificial insemination. This is why sperm banks preserve the anonymity of the donor. Another reason is that this method of procreation also psychologically impacts the husband, wife and child of such unions which has its own implications.
Certain religions, like Roman Catholicism and Islam are opposed to artificial insemination in any form and for whatever reason. They argue that the basis of procreation is the sexual act. Artificial insemination is wrong, even with the husband’s sperm, because the act of insemination is not the natural act which, by its very nature, is expressive of love.
Jewish teaching however consents to the use of the husband's sperm for artificial insemination provided certain conditions are met. The teaching though is not uniform regarding the method employed in obtaining the sperm.
