Artificial insemination is the process by which the sperm is placed into the reproductive tract of a female for the purpose of impregnating the female. In humans it is primarily used to treat infertility, but is now being increasingly used to enable single women to have children. |
In these cases the woman is the gestational and genetic mother of the child and the sperm donor is the genetic or biological father of the child.
The process of artificial insemination is as follows -- when an ovum is released, semen from a male partner or by a sperm donor is inserted into the vagina or uterus of the woman. The semen may be fresh or frozen which has been thawed.
In case of vaginal artificial insemination, semen is placed in the vagina with the help of needle less syringe and a longer tube is attached to the end of the syringe to deposit the semen deeper into the vagina and the woman is asked to lie still for half an hour after the process to prevent seepage and to allow the fertilization to take place.
Another method that can be used is by placing the sperm in the woman’s vagina by means of a specially designed cervical cap, which holds the semen for several hours and allows fertilization to take place.
However, one of the more efficient methods of artificial insemination is to insert the semen directly into the uterus of the woman. In this method only ‘washed’ semen is used and is inserted through a catheter. Specially designed equipment is used for carrying out artificial insemination. The semen is sometimes inserted twice within a treatment cycle and if the procedure is successful, the woman is likely to conceive a baby.
