The studies to find out the effects of an absent father began some time in the 1940s. During that time, the researchers were more worried about how the absence would have an effect on a boy's sexual adaptation. So, all the researches concentrated on this topic. However, it was only later that researchers realized that a father's absence also affects a girl equally. So, it then overall studies began to understand the effects of an absent father.

Researchers have found that in cases where the fathers are absent, kids tend to under perform in school, have psychological adjustment problems, display anti-social behaviors, and have problems in forming and keeping intimate relationships.

Hence, it can be said that having a male role model in the house is important for kids. In fact, it is not just about a father being around and earning for the family. It is more than that the kids need. They need the company of a father, somebody to turn to if the mother gets angry, somebody to teach them things that only fathers can do and somebody to tuck them into bed and make them feel safe and secure.

In families where fathers are not around, the mother has no form of support to lean on. Hence, such mothers are often impatient, working hard to provide for the family and are generally too tired to spend meaningful time with the kids. So, the effects of an absent father tend to compound and grow bigger. This is the reason why statistics reveal that delinquency and other anti-social behaviors are higher among such kids.
