Teen fathers are those who become fathers before the age of 20 and sometimes, even before the age of 18. Teen fatherhood reached a peak in 1991 and then showed a decline. But teens are still becoming fathers. |
Generally, early fatherhood is almost always unplanned, takes place outside marriage and has repercussions for the teen fathers, their partners and both their families.
What are the repercussions of teen fatherhood? The following are implications for fathers:
Parenthood is not easy and it should never be entered into lightly. Whatever the circumstances surrounding conception are, you are a parent for the rest of your life. Just because mothers carry the child in them does not make them the more important parent. Once you know a child is yours, your life is changed forever no matter if you are a teen parent and a kid yourself.
If you become a teen father and you are forced to pay child support, it will not portent good for you or your child. You would have to drop out of school to work and pay child support; and since you do not have a high school diploma, you will end up working at the minimum wage which will be insufficient for child support as well as your upkeep.
