Adjusting To Fatherhood

After waiting for so long, your bundle of joy has arrived. Being a new dad for the first time, there are a host of responsibilities and above all the new father has to learn to adjust to the member in the family. Being a new father will mean making many compromises and adapting to changes.

Here are some tips that will help you adjust to fatherhood:

  1. There is always fatigue and exhaustion with a new baby. Newborn babies wake up every few hours for their feed. Sometimes, the baby does not sleep through the night for many months. This can be really hard on the parents. It is best to sleep in turns. Go to bed early and adjust your schedule with the mother.
  2. Mom requires time to recover after the new baby is born. Do not pressurize her to have sex immediately. She might be a little too keyed up for sex. However, this is not a permanent state and will change. But you need to give the mother time and space.
  3. Maintain communication lines and your relationship as a couple. Talk about other things and not always about the baby.
  4. Mom needs a break especially when she is at home all day with the baby. You will have to balance home and work. Make sure you make time to spend with the mother so that you can recapture your intimacy. In addition, these precious moments will help you get closer.
  5. You need to forget all about gender roles that are traditionally followed. The role of a new father is not very different from that of the mother. Changing diapers, carrying about a diaper bag, taking time off work to visit the pediatrician are routine activities associated with the baby which you should get used to. Dual responsibility parenting is what you have to do. A close bond with your baby will emerge if you are involved and this entails taking over traditional roles of the mother.
  6. Relate to the baby and shed all your inhibitions. Eating and sleeping is all that the baby can do for some time. Find out your baby’s likes and dislikes, what causes comfort and discomfort. This will help to keep the baby’s attention which is the foundation of bonding.
