Grandparents can actually take care of their grandchild if they believe that their own children are unfit to take care of the child. This is one of the most common reasons why grandparents file for temporary custody order. Grandparents should consider filing for temporary relative custody. The reasons for this should be drug abuse, financial issues or mental health status. Basically it is called temporary because there is hope for betterment in the situation of the biological parent. |
Another way is to file a dependency action. However, the case will get automatically transferred to social services and they will investigate the matter further. If a grandparent feels that the child is being abused or neglected, then they could go ahead with this type of a case. During this time the child can be put under the care of grandparents or even a foster home. So, there is a big chance that grandparents are taking here.
The third way is to get a mutual consent from the parents to bring up the child until they stabilize. The reasons for this could be discord in marital relationship that is affecting the child, ill health of the parents that they are unable to give any kind of care for the child, or severe financial issues.
Fourth is adopting their own grandchild. Again social services will make the final decision only after they see whether the grandparents are fit enough to bring up the child and whether they will be able to stick to the commitment. This can also be done with the parent’s consent.
