Shared Physical Custody Arrangements

Shared custody is much preferred these days with the increase in interest of the fathers in their children’s welfare. However, the court is the final authority that decides whether the parents can have complete custody, partial custody or joint custody, which is another name for shared custody.

Shared physical custody means that each of the parents can have the physical presence of the children in their house. This type of custody is of many types. Like, the children spend the summers in their father's house, or another extreme is that they and keep switching home week by week or just about everyday. It can get as unreasonable as it sounds. So, in this case, the children have two primary homes. However, when it comes to expense, the parents would share the responsibilities equally. For example, there would be several needs like health care, welfare, sports and activities, and much more. Each parent would have to contribute the necessary expenses.

Custody is a term that all lawyers fear because it becomes a fight just when the topic is raised. The arrangements are reached with great difficulty. Joint custody is actually a convenient thing because even women these days are expected to work full time. So, when they have to share the responsibility of the children equally, then it becomes easy for both of them. Also, some couples willingly negotiate for shared physical custody just to avoid a harrowing legal battle.

On the whole, there are several advantages of joint physical custody for the parents and children. The children have equal access to their mother and father even after the divorce.
