How Easy Is It To Change To Joint Physical Custody ?

Joint physical custody means that the child will live a significant amount of time with each parent and have frequent and continuing contact with both parents. It could be done by alternating weeks with each parent or breaking the week between two homes.

If a decision regarding joint physical custody cannot be made by you, the court will do it on your behalf. However, to get it, the following should be considered.

1. You must have a practical schedule drawn up.
2. You must be able to show that you have the time and ability to care for the child and that the child will not be upset.
3. You should be able to show the judge that you have been actively involved in the child’s upbringing and making sensible decisions about him.
4. You have to show that you and the other parent have been communicative and cooperative and you will continue in the same way.
5. Show that everything is done with the best interest of the child.

A joint physical custody may be difficult if there is drug or alcohol abuse, domestic violence, child abuse or mental illness of either parent.

Is joint custody arrangement the right thing to do? It depends on the relationship that one has. Your child’s age should be considered, the current quality and nature of the parent-child relationship. It requires a great deal of maturity, commitment and cooperation to make the child’s needs a priority. With this in mind, it would be successful.
