What Is Child Support For ?

Child support is paid by the parents to take care of the needs of minor children. The amount of child support to be paid is determined by the court based on income of the parents, standard of living of the child, needs, and necessities. It is considered as the primary obligation of the parent to pay child support.

The amount that is declared covers more than the bare necessities for the child. For example, if the child was being brought up with certain comforts, then the court sees to it that the child should not compromise on those because of the divorce. So, it becomes the responsibility of the parent to maintain the standard of living for the child like before.

Child support mainly includes the money needed to take care of the child’s personal expenditure like food, clothes, transport and outings. It does not include the insurance and medical bills, and these things need to be sorted out as and when the need arises. The court would lay down such rules even for such circumstances. Typically, when a divorce happens, either the parents can have joint custody of their children, or one parent can have custody. It depends on how the couple filed for the case, and how it was judged. The rules for joint custody and complete custody change from state to state. Moreover, some federal rules also apply.

Child support is mainly paid for the benefit of the child. It is not an income or a tax benefit, but purely for the child and his or her well being.
