Child Support Guidelines

As per the Bar Council of the United States of America, child support is always determined by the State’s guidelines and the number of children and few other factors. The income of the parents also plays a key role in the determination of child support. The formula on which the child support is calculated is dependant on how many children the family has to support and what does it cost for any average family of the same size to do that. The expenses are fed into a child support calculator, and then the amount for child support is calculated.

Many states have their own legal website for child support, and some even provide calculators. If your income is too low or more than expected, then additional rules will apply accordingly. When considering the income of the person, who is paying the child support, the court also considers the deductions. However, it can vary from state to state.

There are several things like local taxes, retirement savings, dues and insurance which are considered. Also, if there are other payments that are already being made, then even they are considered. In most cases, if parents are receiving public assistance, then that can be excluded from the income.

There are two categories when it comes to child support. For income below $80,000 and for income above $80,000 there are different rules. Child support is different from health insurance costs and other types of insurance. Also, parents are expected to take care of child care costs. If there are other children from other relationships, then all of them are taken into the same bracket.
