Fathers Rights Related To Abortion

The issue of abortion is generally devoted to dealing with the rights of the mother and her fetus. The rights of the father are rarely discussed. A woman can legally deprive a man’s right to become a parent.

Most cases concerning fathers and abortion is when the father wants the mother to have an abortion. But sometimes the case is the other way round where the mother wants an abortion and the father cannot do enough to have her convince to have the baby. Father’s rights have never been really discussed.

According to George W Harris, the idea that there are circumstances under which a woman’s decision to have an abortion would be morally wrong because it would cause harm to the father of the child. If the father has a morally legitimate interest in having the child and the mother misleads the father into believing that she will give him a child if he fulfills certain conditions and the father does those things, it is wrong for the mother to deliberately prevent the father from having the child.

In most countries men have no rights to insist that a woman should or should not abort an embryo that they have fathered. Most of the legal systems don’t allow a father to escape responsibility for his child and for paying to support that child which applied even if the father had wanted the mother to have an abortion.

In the Supreme Court's decision, Roe v. Wade the fundamental assumption was that since the woman was inextricably linked to the birth process, only she had the right in deciding the fate of her child.
