When Is Fathers Day This Year ?

Father’s Day is celebrated annually to honor our fathers for all that they do for us throughout their life. Father’s day 2009 was celebrated on June 21st. In 2010, Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 20th. The holiday always falls on the third Sunday in June. In the US and UK, it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.

In Australia, this holiday is observed on the first Sunday in September.

Fathers Day was first observed at the Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont, West Virginia. The official observance was suggested in 1909 by Mrs. Sonora Dodd. The idea occurred to her when she was attending a service in Spokane, Washington on Mother’s Day. She realized that in her family, it was her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who had raised her and five sons alone after her mother died an early death in childbirth. Her father had gone through many hardships to raise his 5 children.

Mrs. Dodd’s proposal was supported by the town’s ministers and members of The Spokane YMCA. Interest for Fathers Day increased. Among the first persons to support her proposal, was the orator and public leader William Jennings Bryan. He felt that fathers must not be ignored. Fathers Day, however, was not so quickly accepted as Mother’s Day.

Fathers Day was made an official holiday by a bill introduced in 1913. It wasn’t a permanent holiday until 1976 by President Nixon.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson and his family observed and celebrated Father's Day. But it was only in 1972 that it was permanently established by President Nixon. Today, it is the fifth largest greeting card occasion in the US with 85 million greeting cards exchanged.
