Fathers Day is celebrated worldwide with a lot of sincerity and respect. It is rather interesting to know the history of Father's Day and how it originated. The third Sunday in June is earmarked to celebrate Father’s Day in many countries. It is a day when fathers are honored. The idea originated in Spokane, Washington. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd christened the idea while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. She was brought up by her father after her mother’s death. Sonora wanted to express her feelings for her father and wanted him to know how special he was. She admired her father for his parental sacrifices and thought he was a selfless, courageous and loving man. Her father was born in June, so she had the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19 June, 1910.
In 1924, President Coolidge declared Father’s Day a national holiday. President Johnson set aside the third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day in 1966. It was only in 1972 that it was established by President Nixon as a permanent holiday.
Red is the official flower on Father’s day, red for living fathers and white for those who were not alive.
Father’s Day is not reserved only for real life fathers. Even fathers on television are honored. These TV fathers have also influenced generations of children and fathers.
