A toddler starts going to preschool to learn somewhere at the age of 2 years and two months to 2 years and six months. They are still a bundle of activity at this age. Preschool toddlers are very difficult to teach given their attention span. So, whatever a teacher does should be fun and look like play. It is not like classroom teaching where children are expected to sit and the teacher can write on the blackboard. Teaching can happen only through interactive lessons. |
Activities for preschoolers should be based on physical and mental development. So, every activity should factor in the use of hands and also intelligence. For example, you can use different textures and teach them what is hard, what is soft, heavy and light. You are sensitizing their fingers, teaching them to identify various qualities and textures. There are several activities like these. You can also get them to use various leaves from their own garden to identify shapes and also plants.
Toddlers can learn a lot more even at this young age. However, no activity should be for more than 10 minutes. Some of the initial activities should be based on handling their study material. They should be taught hand to eye coordination so that they can work without constantly dropping and picking things.
Counting is another important thing you need to teach children. You can do these using items like balls or something easy to hold like cotton balls. Give them a handful and ask them to drop one by one in a bowl or a bag and count loudly.
