Thrush In Newborns

A newborn baby can get several kinds of small illnesses and they are prone to it. One of the most common kinds of ailment or infection is thrush. Thrush is an oral infection and is caused by yeast infection. It occurs on the insides of the newborn’s mouth. When your baby opens the mouth, you will find milky white substance coating the insides of the mouth. You will find it on the roof of the mouth and the tongue also. It usually occurs in newborn babies, and sometimes in older babies also.

There are few ways through which a baby can get oral thrush. If you have yeast infection on your nipples, then it is possible that the baby got it from you. A newborn can also acquire yeast infection from the birth canal if you have had yeast infection.

Babies with oral thrush may feel uncomfortable while breastfeeding and in several cases the infection just goes away without treatment. Some babies, who are refusing to feed, may need some kind of treatment. However, it is not possible for a baby to get this type of infection without the mother transmitting it.

In order to prevent infections like this in your baby, make sure you sterilize everything that your baby puts into the mouth. Everyday have a bath and then feed your baby. Wash yourself a bit if there is residual of breast milk. Keep that area dry. In case of a bottle fed baby, make sure you sterilize the bottles well.
