Pulse Rate For Newborns

A newborn is not a bundle of activity like other children. In fact, they sleep a lot. However, the pulse rate of a newborn can be high in spite of their inactivity. It is normal for a newborn baby to have a pulse rate of 100 - 160 beats per minute. When a parent holds the baby against their body, they will feel the heart beat of the baby. It may be very fast, but there is nothing to panic.

Babies take in short breaths, and that is why their heart beat is also fast. When babies fall sick, the color of their skin and breathing pattern varies. These should be used as clear indicators of ill health.

If you feel that the heart rate may be higher than the normal prescribed level for the infants, then you should visit the doctor promptly. A constant high heart rate may indicate tachycardia in a baby.

Some babies also have irregular heart beats. If it is a constant thing, then you should get medical help. If the baby’s heart beat is fast on a specific day, then first take the temperature. Usually just like the heartbeat, a baby’s body temperature is also slightly higher than normal. Sometimes a consistent high rate of heart beat indicates a congenital heart disease. Infancy is too early to determine anything unless the defect was found out even before the baby is born. A rapid heart beat could be due to anything from a common cold to nothing at all.
