Meconium In Newborns

All parents expect their newborn babies to be hale, hearty and healthy. However, some babies have to go through labor room complications. One of the common conditions to affect the newborn babies is the meconium aspiration syndrome. It can be a serious condition if ignored. This condition typically occurs during labor, and after or before labor also.

In this condition, the baby inhales the meconium which is a mixture of amniotic fluid and the baby’s feces. The baby should pass the first feces outside the birth canal. But sometimes the baby may do it inside the birth canal and that is why this complication occurs. It is a green color substance, that is first passed in the womb and then after the birth.

When a baby inhales the meconium, it can completely or partially block the airways. The meconium can be trapped there and irritate them. It can also make it difficult for the baby to breathe. There are several ways in which the meconium can affect like causing chemical irritation in the lung tissues, and causing wheezing. The severity of the condition depends on the amount of blockage. It typically occurs when the baby is overdue.

In case the blockage is very severe, doctors will have to attend to it immediately. You can see that the baby’s body is blue because of lack of oxygen. If the baby is under stress, then the doctor may order immediate blood tests to identify the presence of meconium in the blood stream. If it is present, then it is removed by ventilation or oxygen therapy.
