Infant formula is used instead of breast milk to feed children when they are infants. The American Pediatrics Association strongly recommends that babies should have breast milk for several reasons. However, some babies or some mothers cannot feed their baby breast milk. Some women do not lactate due to hormonal problems. For such children, doctors prescribe the infant formula. |
Also, infant formula is used as top up feed or some mothers may feed their baby with it once in a day. Many doctors recommended infant baby formula after the baby is about 6 months old.
Once they reach that age, babies' appetite increases. Though breast milk is still preferred, they will need more nutrition. They may not be able to eat solids at that time. So, doctors prescribe formula which is fully capable of providing the babies with additional nutrition. If a baby is only on breast milk, then their hunger may not be satisfied and they will constantly ask for more feed.
Infant formula is ideal for babies during their play time or in the nights. There are several kinds and brands of infant formula available today like Enfamil, Pediasure and also some are soy-based, while others are wheat-based. You should always talk to your doctor about which formula to give your baby.
An infant formula will have all the necessary minerals and vitamins required for the baby and also fat content. This will ensure that the baby gets the same benefits as what he or she would have gotten from a whole meal. It will have the right combination of protein, carbohydrates, fat and vitamins essential for the growth and development of the body.
