Some kids are born with birthmarks, and some do not have any. Birthmarks are often seen on infants in different shapes and sizes. One of the common types of birthmark that affects nearly 10 percent of the children is the strawberry birthmark. It is called the strawberry hemangioma. |
These types of birthmarks are very easy to differentiate from the others. They will be soft, raised and red in color. They may not be present at the time of birth, but may appear on the body after the first month of birth. These birth marks will grow rapidly within the first one year of the baby. They slowly start fading away after the child is 18 months old and also become smaller in size. Most of the hemangiomas go away by the time the child is five years old. Some may turn small and purple or grey.
Unless the birthmark is coming in the way of the infant’s development like blocking the vision or nasal tract there is no need for treatment as it will go away after few years. Usually otherwise the doctors will have to remove it surgically. However, if the birthmark starts bleeding, then you can apply pressure in any other area of the body so that it stops bleeding. The child is given treatment only if the birthmark is not improving.
Treatments of hemangiomas are usually harsh where steroids are given so that it does not grow further. However, the hemangiomas may not grow further, but they do not become smaller in size.
