Pain Assessments In Infants

Any child under the age of two is considered to be an infant. Infants do not know how to express if they are in pain or facing discomfort. The first thing they will do is cry. However, a parent can make out if their baby is in pain or crying due to hunger. Some people, who are not experienced with the babes, like first time parents find it very difficult to tell why their child is crying inconsolably.

It is very difficult to tell if a baby is pain because infants cannot communicate. However, one can use some psychological and behavioral indicators to tell if the baby is in pain.

There is actually no instrument or indicator that can measure pain accurately. So, professionals mainly assess pain using some behavioral aspects and correlating them to physical attributes. There are multiple aspects that are taken into consideration. There is something called the neonatal facial coding system, or NFCS, that is used by hospitals and medical professionals. This helps to measure any kind of acute pain faced by infants.

Some of the facial muscle expressions in infants are retracting the heel suddenly, bulging of eye brows, squeezing their eyes, keeping the lips wide open, stretching the mouth, pursed lips and tongue protrusion. These could be some of the indicators as they are body’s natural reaction to pain. As per psychiatrists, the facial expressions are the most reliable indicators as they occur naturally. Infants are innocent and they cannot hide these features also. Since they are natural indicators, one can take the help of these to know if an infant is in pain.
