Infants may seem very calm and sleeping all the time, but in reality they are very busy people. They are busy learning the ways of life and survival tactics from their parents. This includes talking and expressing. It is one of the most difficult tasks for babies to achieve and learn. This is true even for the sounds they start making. |
Think about yourself trying to learn a different language without any written help and you are trying to decipher what others are saying, it is the same thing with the infants. It is a step by step process for a baby.
Long before they start speaking, infants spend time only listening. Babies may not pay attention directly by looking at you and acknowledging what you say. In fact, they are listening to you all the time and one of the first sounds they recognize is their own name. That is why babies automatically respond when you call out the name. The initial sounds that sound like cooing are the first attempts of babies to talk. If parents respond to their baby, then they are also encouraging their baby to talk sooner. When you respond to your child when he or she cries, he or she will understand that you are listening to them.
For the first six months of a baby’s life, their main way of communication is by crying. So, every time a baby cries, it does not mean that they are under distress or hungry. Try to understand your baby based on their needs. It is around 8 or 12 months that a baby starts uttering some of the first words like mama or papa.
