Infant Eye Contact

All babies from the age of 3 months to 12 months make eye contact even with strangers. However, whether they smile or cry is up to them. Even babies younger than 3 months of age know their mother and when she talks, they make eye contact with her. They follow her movements, and also turn around to look her.

Infants at this age also have a strong sense of smell. Through their smell and vision, they can tell the difference between parents and strangers. When a very small baby does not make eye contact, then there could be something wrong. If the baby does not make eye contact all the time, then the parents should talk with the doctor. If it is not a regular occurrence and happens now and then, it could be that the baby is not interested. It is very difficult to tell if there is a problem in an infant based on their body movements and behavior.

By the time the baby is six months old, they will make constant eye contact with the mother. An infant who does not make eye contact, is directly linked with autism. However, there would be other tell tale signs like the infant not cuddling up to the mother. These signs are unusual because every infant will be happiest in their mother’s arms. Also, they will be weak and have a poor muscle tone. There will also be developmental delays. If all these come together, then your infant may be having autism. It is best to get the baby evaluated by a professional.
